Architecture and Enology in La Rioja Alavesa

La Rioja is so much more than excellent red wines. We invite lovers of the architecture and wines to discover a splendid landscape, friendly people, an exquisite gastronomy elaborated with prime quality products and its artistic heritage and traditions.

In this region vineyards have influenced the character of the people and its architecture. This month we have made a good selection from the wineries of Rioja Alavesa.

BODEGAS YSIOS IN LAGUARDIA

In the most beautiful part of the Rioja Alavesa rises the surprising silhouette of Ysios, fully integrated into the landscape.

The architect Santiago Calatrava designed it from the sublimation of the outline of a row of barrels. Inside, you will find the same ultra-modern style too.

CIUDAD DEL VINO IN ELCIEGO

Is a complex comprising the oldest winery of Rioja, the winery of Marqués de Riscal (1858) and a new building designed by the Canadian architect, Frank O. Gehry

BODEGA FABULISTA

The Fabulist’s Cellar stands out among the underground cellars. It was built in XII century and It is located under the Palace of the Samaniegos. The cellar is prepared for culltural visits and elaborates its wines in a traditional way, for the pleasure of its visitors.

To learn a little bit about the history and culture of the wine we propose a visit of the New Museum of Wine Culture Dinastia Vivanco or a tasting course in the interactive Thematic Center dedicated to wine in Laguardia, Villa Lucia

Take a deserved break in the Parador de Santo Domingo de La Calzada,  built by Saint Dominic to give shelter to the pilgrims on the Road to Santiago.

In its Restaurant you can enjoy the traditional meal : a sample stuffed 'piquillo' peppers or a cod Rioja style, in addition to the excellent wines of La Rioja.

Not far away you can also experience a new gastronomy in The Echaurren, the first Michelin Star Restaurant in La Rioja, where Francis Paniego achieves the perfect marriage between the most ultramodern cuisine with the traditional cooking.

Take the time to visit Spain. Enjoy our excellent gastronomy, heritage monuments, friendly people and why not, enhance your knowledge of wine.
